There is one type of photography article I enjoy reading above all others. In this type of article you won’t find information on the latest and greatest gear. You won’t find discussions of specific photography locations. You won’t even find talk about camera settings or technical aspects such as depth of field.
What you will find is honest, hard learned advice. But, it isn’t the fluffy feel good kind. It’s the stuff that is a blow to the gut for those with dreams in their mind and fog in front of their eyes. It’s the sort of truth that is refreshing to find in a world awash with self-promotion and product endorsements.
These particular articles are full of honest truth about how tough a business the world of nature and landscape photography actually is. Kevin Adams flat out wrote (link to full article below):
“If it sounds like I’m discouraging you from the outset, you’re right. But I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t tell it straight. You have to see it for what it is first, then if you have the desire to continue, you’ll do fine. If you start out with thoughts of glamour, you’ll never make through the tough parts.”
As time goes on these are the articles I continue to re-read. It is comforting to know that the market is tough for everyone when emails to a publisher/art buyer/etc goes unanswered. In that way it is motivational to read these articles and remember what one is truly up against when trying to get somewhere from nowhere. Zack Arias often quotes “Photography calls many, but chooses few.”
The knowledge of how steep of a climb the journey will be is actually encouraging because the honest truth is refreshing. And I for one like a long term goal. If something is easily accomplished then it is easy. If it requires a hard fought journey then it can be considered a goal. These are the articles that come to mind when the alarm goes off well before the sun comes up and the bed is especially nice and warm. They help put one foot in front of the other as each step along a journey is traveled.
Below are several that do an outstanding job of covering the topic:
